Cookie Clicker Ascension Guide: When to Ascend and What to Buy First

This Cookie Clicker ascension guide covers the two decisions that matter: when to ascend, and what to buy first when you do. Ascension wipes your run, but each prestige level you bank adds a permanent +1% to your cookies per second across every future run. You can test any of it by playing on cookieclickerunblocked.io with this guide open beside it.

What ascension actually does

Ascending is a soft reset: you forfeit your current cookies, buildings, and upgrades, and the game converts those forfeited cookies into prestige levels and heavenly chips that stay forever. Prestige levels give +1% CpS each in every future run. Heavenly chips are the currency you spend on heavenly upgrades inside the ascension screen. Prestige does nothing until you re-buy Legacy, which is why it is your first purchase every time.

When to ascend for the first time

Aim for 200 to 440 prestige levels on your first ascension. The community splits into three camps, and your pick depends on how much you value your time.

Fast recovery~200You rebuild your old CpS within a day

Strong restart~440Bigger opening kit that pays off across runs

Ascending with a single chip works but wastes a multi-hour run for a 1% boost. The one exception is a stalled run where golden cookie combos no longer move you forward, in which case a small ascension to unlock Legacy and the dragon beats grinding a dead game. One trillion cookies earns your first prestige level, and reaching 200 to 440 takes most idle players one to three weeks.

How heavenly chips and prestige are calculated

Your prestige level is the cube root of total cookies baked, divided by one trillion:

prestige = floor( (cookies baked all time / 1 trillion) ^ (1/3) )

That cube root is why progress slows. Each level n needs n³ × 1 trillion cookies, so going from 100 to 200 levels costs roughly seven times the cookies, not double. Chips and prestige arrive 1:1, so the two numbers always match.

101 quadrillion
1001 quintillion
2008 quintillion

The buy order for your first ascension

Buy in this exact order. The numbers are the heavenly chip cost.

Heavenly Luck77Raises golden cookie frequency
Permanent Upgrade Slot 1100Carry one upgrade into every run
Heralds100CpS bonus tied to the live player count

Krumblor’s auras pay off in every future run, so the dragon is worth grabbing immediately. Skip the Tin of Butter Cookies on a tight first ascension; it is overpriced until chips are plentiful. The instant you finish buying and purchase your first grandma, your CpS spikes and you pass your old record fast.

The milestone path beyond your first run

After the first ascension you chase upgrade tiers instead of exact numbers.

The prestige tree (the Angel line, then the demon line of Belphegor up to Satan) raises how much of your prestige converts to CpS, so prioritise it through the mid game.

Permanent upgrade slots

Each slot locks one non-prestige upgrade so it is active from the first second of every new run, and you can change the choice for free at any later ascension. Put your highest Kitten upgrade in the first slot, since kittens multiply CpS by milk and cost the most to re-buy each run. Slots cannot hold prestige upgrades, research upgrades, or switches.

Active versus idle

Active players reach milestones faster through golden cookie combos, so they prioritise Heavenly Luck and the dragon. Idle players lean on offline production, which the right upgrades push to 91% for up to seven days, making the grind painless. Idle players can delay the active-only golden cookie upgrades and buy them later.

Frequently asked questions

When should I ascend for the first time?

Aim for 200 to 440 prestige levels on your first ascension. That range gives you enough heavenly chips to buy Legacy, the dragon, and your first permanent upgrade slot, which is the kit that makes your next run dramatically faster.

How many heavenly chips do I need for my first ascension?

Around 365 chips is the clean target. It affords the full recommended opening list including Heavenly Cookies, How to Bake Your Dragon, Permanent Upgrade Slot 1, and Heralds without leaving you short.

Does ascending reset everything?

Ascending wipes your current run’s cookies, buildings, and upgrades, but it keeps your prestige levels, heavenly chips, heavenly upgrades, and achievements, which carry across every future run. Only the separate “Wipe Save” option erases that permanent progress.

What is the prestige level formula?

Your prestige level is the floor of the cube root of total cookies baked all time divided by one trillion. Each level n needs n³ × 1 trillion cookies, which is why higher milestones take so much longer to reach.

Should I ascend at 200 or 400 prestige?

Both work. 200 lets you recover faster and start banking upgrades sooner, while 400 gives you a stronger opening kit including an extra permanent slot. If you value speed, ascend at 200. If you value a powerful restart, wait for 400.

What goes in a permanent upgrade slot?

Put your highest available Kitten upgrade in your first slot, since kittens give a large CpS multiplier and are expensive to re-buy each run. You can change the choice for free at any later ascension.

Why does my Legacy button only show +2?

The number beside Legacy is how many heavenly chips and prestige levels you will earn if you ascend right now. A low number just means you have not baked enough cookies yet, because the requirement scales with the cube of your prestige level.

Is it worth ascending with only 1 chip?

Not usually. A single chip is a 1% boost, which does not justify resetting a multi-hour run. Only ascend that early if your run has completely stalled and you simply want to unlock Legacy and the dragon.

What does ascending with 777 prestige do?

Ending your prestige level in specific runs of sevens unlocks the Lucky Digit, Lucky Number, and Lucky Payout upgrades. The hardest needs six sevens (777,777), and hitting that one unlocks all three at once.

How long does the first ascension take?

Reaching 200 to 440 prestige levels takes most idle players one to three weeks, since the first prestige level alone needs a trillion cookies. Active players chasing golden cookie combos get there considerably faster.

Final verdict

Ascension is not the end of your run, it is the start of a much faster one. Bank your first 200 to 440 levels, buy Legacy and the dragon, slot your best kitten upgrade, and your next run will outpace everything you just gave up within a day. Fire up Cookie Clicker cheat codes and make your first ascension count.
